Man page suffix

How does the man page suffix extension work?

I'm trying to identify the man pages for the X11 commands by appending an
"X" to the file (eg. xterm.1X). I know that man can accept suffixes (there
are allready v and g files on our system and the man man page says that I
can do man 1X xterm). However, when I do this, man can no longer find
xterm. What have I missed?
