4/65 with old 140/60 shoebox: sometimes?

I have a Sun shoebox containing a 140MB ESDI disk with Emulex controller,
and a 60MB tape drive, I think Archive (it's got the thumb-thing you slide
to the right to engage the tape). It sits on a 3/60 and is happy.
I bought a diskless 4/65, and needed to boot it from something. I tried
this shoebox, but the tape seemed to just go back and forth forever. My
Sun technical guy says that this configuration is "not supported"
precisely because they didn't get it to work and didn't really bother to
get to the bottom of it. Some of them work, he says, and some don't. It
would be a nightmare for them to support this.
Why does it fail? How does it fail, precisely? Anyone who has had this
experience and got a solid answer, please respond! Sun was quite
responsive, within reason: they called me back the next day and gave me an
answer. It just wasn't the answer I wanted. :-)
