Tapeless install under SunOS 4.1

I have recently had the pleasure 8-| of attempting a tapeless install of
SunOS 4.1 onto a Quantum 105 meg drive.  After following the instructions
in the appendix about installing the mini-root onto the drive, I found
that running 'suninstall' causes a media error (device off-line).  It is
my assumption that this is due to an attempt to position a local tape.

Has ANYONE successfully gotten this to work?  I called Sun Tech Support
and they assured me that I had somehow messed up since 'you are the first
of THOUSANDS of people doing this to have a problem'.  **ARGH**

(NOTE:  The instructions for FORMATTING a disk on a tapeless system are
	NOWHERE to be found in Sun's manual)
