Sun as server for non-sun client

I am using a Sun 707E under SunOS4.03 as server for a
             PS2/80   under AIX-PS 1.2 as client.

Monting AIX directories from the server works perfectly.  However, AIX-PS
also has a DOS-MERGE facility, opening a window in which there runs DOS
3.3 . Filling a server's directory with DOS files permits to read them in
the clients AIX state, but going to DOS-MERGE on the client results in
having those files inaccessible under DOS. 

Inquiries at IBM received the answer that the problem is not on the
client's side but must be on the server's (actually the same problem is
said to have occurred with IBM machines as servers and, for these, was
fixed on the server side).

Does anyone have experience with the situation and suggestions as to how
