I also had a problem, but it turned out to be an option switch
setting. Specifically, if the AST's "Interrupt Sharing" switch is
enabled (SW3-3 down), the AST board is then looking for *another*
AST board to be installed in your computer. If it doesn't find it,
things tend to just sit there. Turning the switch ON (disable
interrupt sharing) made everything work just just fine.
On my system, I have a multi-purpose board on IRQ4 (parallel
printer and serial port /dev/tty0), so I set up the AST for IRQ3.
Here are the specifics...(I saved it in /etc/ttysetup just so I could
always do it the same way again when the next system upgrade comes
through):
----/etc/ttysetup--------------
# Setup for AST 4-port Cluster board
#
# NOTE: AST Interrupt sharing switch is set to "disabled" (SW3-3 ON)
# tty1 (IRQ 3 == COM2) is not connected
#
# IRQ 3
# Vector 447 (0x1bf)
# Channel 1 416-423 (0x1a0-0x1a7) tty2
# Channel 2 424-431 (0x1a8-0x1af) tty3
# Channel 3 432-439 (0x1b0-0x1b7) tty4
# Channel 4 440-446 (0x1b8-0x1be) tty5
#
/etc/ttypatch -t2 -n4 -i3 -v447 -a416 -m0
# IRQ 4 1016-1023 (0x3f8-0x3ff) tty0
#
/etc/ttypatch -t0 -n1 -i4 -a1016 -m12
# No tty1 defined
#
/etc/ttypatch -t1 -n1 -c
