uucico error message

On my SCO Xenix 286 v2.2.1 system, /usr/lib/uucp/uucico will print the error

AERROR - (nw == ns) BAD WRITE @errno=xx

(where xx is a random integer)

when it is executed and the line it chooses to attempt to dial out on is
already locked by another process (unimportant what the process is; the lock
file seems to be all that is necessary); on SCO Xenix 2.2.1 UUCP locks are
kept in /usr/spool/uucp/LCK..ttyXX.

Why do I get this error (and what precisely does it mean) in such a normal
circumstance? It almost seems as though a debugging option was compiled in?
Of course, SCO didn't see it fit to provide sources, so I can't check...

Thanks
