Space limit on bc programs

Is there any way around the space limit that causes bc to terminate
with `program too big on line <number>, [teletype|<filename>]'
whenever I try to load more than ~200 program lines?  (This is on
a SUN-3 or SUN-4; we do not have source code for bc or dc.)
