mysteriously full root partition solved

Thanks to all who responded on this - even the suggestions that didn't
lead to the solution are useful in pointing out where potential problems
might occur (I'm new at this stuff, in case you hadn't guessed).

Anyhow, the problem was a file hiding under an NFS mount - I wasn't aware
that those directories were writable while the partition in question is
mounted, but now I know.

One of the morals of this story is to be careful about who gets root access!
