ld -r problems with SCO UNIX 3.2

I am trying to combine multiple .o's into one .o. Please do not tell
me to use a .a. I don't want one in this case. The command syntax
works fine in SCO XENIX and in SunOS. The command is:

	ld -r -o ../all.o *.o

It complains by saying something like "invalid record type 0xb5". What's
the deal????? The specific .o file on which it complains seems to be a function
of size. IE: compiled with debug (-g) the compliant is sooner than without.
