Accessing terminfo

Is there an API to get information from a terminfo data base?

I am trying to find programmatically, the device specific escape sequence associated with various printers. The required information is stored in terminfo data base. I can use 'tput' and 'popen' to get the required info, but that would be a very cumbersome method.
