(g)prof on Sun's

I have been having trouble generating (g)mon.out files
for use with (g)prof.

On a simple program:  I compile with f77 -p (or -pg) on our
Sun running 4.03, run the program and my *.out file is generated,
no problem.

On a large program (not written by me):  I follow the above procedure
and get a core dump from running the "-p" version, and from neither the
"-p" nor the "-pg" codes do I get a *.out file.

What could be wrong that I don't get the *.out file?

Any clues/help would be appreciated!
