Use of sz/rz

I am currently using tip to communicate with a local host. I have used kermit
up to now, but the overhead is killing me at 9600 baud. I have sz on the 
remote host and rz on my machine, but when I use "~|" to pipe sz to rz
tip responds "csh: permission denied". If someone could post an example of
how to download using zmodem using tip or cu, I'd sure appreciate it.
