System() in AWK

In a DOS implementation of AWK there is a system
function, which I've grown to rely on chiefly
to import contents of files into the final output.
For example:
$1 == "#include" {system(type $2)}
Now I'd like to something like this in UNIX
(with 'cat' instead of 'type'), but AWK
doesn't seem to recognize system(). Any clues?
