Syslog won't start with "loghost" DNS entry???

I've just set up a Sun-SLC as our new mail/name server and have found
that messages are not getting recorded in /var/log/syslog unless I define
as alias "loghost" for this machine in my DNS tables. When I had my mail
server on our Sun-4/280, I had no such entry defined for that machine.
The only real difference is that the Sun-4/280 has NIS running, while
I have not yet brought it up on the SLC. I've tried putting loghost
as an entry in /etc/hosts but that does not work either. Does anyone
have an idea why syslog is acting this way?
