routing error messages on background tasks

How about:

prog >>& /dev/null &  (append standard and diagnostic output to /dev/null)

prog >>& ./log-file & (append standard and diagnostic output to ./log-file)

Hope that helps.  You might want to look at some shell programming books
or the man pages for more information.
