Installation problem and configuration questions

1.) I have installed AT&T System V/386 Release 3.2 Version 2.1 on a
Swan 386/25. I found I had to reboot the machine after each disk
of the base system package was installed as the system would hang
up completely upon beginning to install the contents of the next
disk, while leaving the LEDs for the floppy and hard disk lit and
both drives spinning forever. It turns out that it is the dd command
that is hanging everything up when it accesses the floppy drive. The
first call to dd after a reboot works ok, but the next one hangs it
all up.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to prevent
it? This also happens when I use the installpkg command to install
anything else as well.
2.) I have 4MB of memory installed. I can increase the memory to 8, 10
or 16MB. What I don't understand is what the benefit(s) of doing this
would be. I DO know it would take a hefty bite out of my wallet, but
I am willing to tolerate that if there are any clear benefits to doing
so.
3.) How does one determine the optimum amount of swap space to set aside
on the disk?
Thanks to anyone who can help me with these questions.
