Gcc with GNU ld/gas on 386/ix

I am attempting to build gcc 1.37.1 to use the GNU loader and
assembler. I have followed the instructions in binutils, and have
basically ended up with a mess that doesn't work for the stage1
compile.

I managed to get the first compile to run, with only a few problems.
I then went ahead and built gas and (what I could get to compile of)
binutils. I had to fudge gnulib (run make gnulib, libconvert, and
then finish the make), and that now seems ok. However, when I try to
make stage 1, I end up with:
/usr/public/gnu/lib/gcc-ld: No such file or directory for libg.a
*** Error code 1

I am sure that there is someone out there who must have gotten this to
work. I have successfully compiled gcc without gas and ld, but I
wanted to do it right this time :-). Any suggestions? Am I missing
something obvious, or does it work much different than the
README/INSTALL files?
