Non-X11 VGA Graphics Interface

Does anyine out there know of a Non-X11 GUI and programming interface for
VGA under Unix (I have Esix Rev D). X/Windows is cute, but I just can't
tolerate such cruddy performance. I don't need the client/server relation-
ship that X does so well, and if I ever do, then I suppose I'll put up with
X finally. In the meantime, I need something that can handle my graphics
needs in a more timely manner. Alternatively, an image processing package
and a decent draw program would do. Super-VGA is not a requirement (although
it would be nice :-). Possible hardcopy devices that I'd like support for
are Epson FX-80 and HP Deskjet PLUS (PCL Level 3). If you're using, or have
heard of any such beast or have any suggestions at all on how to do image
processing in a timely manner on a 386 Unix system, please let me know via
e-mail, and I'll post a summary if there's interest. Thanks in advance. -- SMY
