Data exchange problems

ZMany people in this group have already asked for the 'best',
'cheapest' or sexiest UNIX, hardware etc. The answers were very
helpful for my purchasing decisions. One remaining problem is the
choice of a suitable media for the exchange of data above the standard
1.2 or 1.44MB disks with MSDOS format. 

- Which types of cartridges (QIC, Video8, DAT) are in widespread use? 
- Are they available for PC's (drivers)?
- Which are the most cost-effective ones?
- How compatible are the various tar's and cpio's of the sysv386 Unix's
  with e.g. HP-UX, SunOS or Ultrix?
