sendmail weirdness

I'm running SCO OpenDesktop 1.1.
I've seen some discussion here recently about sendmail not being able to
deliver mail coming from the outside because of the luid intricacies.
Well, I got bit too. But I don't know if it's the same problem. I start
sendmail from /etc/tcp with
/bin/su root -c " /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q30m" 2>/dev/null
I poll my uucp mail feed every two hours.
If I wait for the Poll, the transfer takes place (as I see in the uucp logs)
but I never see the incoming mail messages. They just vanish. I can't find
them anywhere. Maybe I don't know enough about the mail system. I looked in
/usr/spool/uucp and all its subdirectories, and in /usr/spool/mqueue.
If I start the poll manually with uutry everything works fine.
What's going on?
