X386 configuration suggestion

I have been playing with X386 now for a few days and really like it. I
have one suggestion for improving it, though. Before my experience with
this product, I never knew that the video set-up could be so configurable
with software. That is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is
obvious but the curse is now that there is so much choice - it is hard
to decide how to configure it all.

Chin Fang's methods are quite helpful and it seems that his suggestions
are such that a program could be written to input your video card and
monitor characteristics and it could compute possible configurations and
put them in your Xconfig file. The user could then use the <Cntrl><Alt><+/->
to go through them and see which he/she prefers. Maybe the user could run
the program again after he has visiually compared the settings and could
choose to tell the program to modify one of them to be wider/narrower,
taller/shorter, etc.

I think this somewhat automated way to do this would be very helpful. If
I knew enough about it, I would even volunteer to work on such a thing.
Even so, I would be willing to work with someone else (who knows more
about tecnicalities of video set-up) on it. Any comments or suggestions?
