date/time inconsistency

I was unfortunate enough to try setting the date under
ultrix while in multi user mode. this has resulted in
my machine having different ideas about what time it is,
in different circumstances. in single user mode, times are
1 hour off what they are in multi-user mode. also, after
logging into the machine, all the initial applications started by
the session manager see the same time as in single user mode.
subsequent csh's etc. see times 1 hour later.
I have tried to resync these by resetting the time in single user
mode and in multi user mode to no avail. They are always one hour
off.
how can I fix this? this is an intolerable state of affairs,
and the manual page simply says "CAUTION: never do this."
--thanks in advance!
