ptrace(26,...) and debuggers

I noticed that ptrace (ULTRIX V4.1, DEC3100 RISC) now seems to support
watchpoints:
(1) are such watchpoints implemented efficiently (i.e. through memory
protection/fault handling) ?
(2) if the answer to (1) is yes, then is there any debugger taking
advantage of it ?
dbx 2.0 simply chokes on stop <variable> (with a "DBX Fault:
Segmentation fault"), while dbx 2.10.1 (from a field test ULTRIX T4.2)
uses the old "single stepping" method.
Thanks !
Luciano
