problem with bib and lookup

When I use lookup, it works fine if there are no references.  It prints
the message "No references found."  However, when it DOES find
references, it doesn't print them out.  Instead it prints one blank
line for each reference found.  Bib seems to have a similar problem.
Any idea what's going on?

I'm using 4.2 UN*X and the version of bib that was distributed with it.
