Graphics and Virtual Terminals

This is dedicated to the brave men that go down to the chips in C...

Does anyone know of a virtual terminal protocol (in the sense  of
the  European  Infomatics Network virtual terminal) that has been
extended to handle graphics as well as text?

Perhaps graphics might be  efficiently  handled  as  yet  another
special case of a block device with a verry large screen...
