How do I configure a gateway host

(This refers to 4.2BSD)
I have a host that is a gateway between two lans. It is connected to
our regular ethernet and also to several "omninet" connected work
stations.
What I am confused about is how to ifconfig the two network interfaces.
Currently I have that host configured with two network addresses. The
first address has a network number appropriate for the ethernet and the
ethernet interface is ifconfiged for that address. The second address
has the network number of the omninet connected work stations and the
omninet interface is configured for that address. The hostname of the
system is the same as the omninet address.
Not only does is seem like a kludge having two network addresses for the
same host but it doesn't work to well either. I can rlogin to the
ethernet address for the gateway but not to its omninet "hostname". I
also cannot reach any of the work stations.
There must be other sites out there with a host configured as a gateway
between networks. I would greatly appreciate any pointers on how the
configuration is supposed to work.
