taring filenames>100 char?

Two things that come to mind right away. Let's say you want to tar
~/<very_long_path>/*.dat

1) % cd ~/<very_long_path>
   % tar c *.dat
or
   % cd ~/<very_long_path>/..
   % tar c ./*.dat

2) create a link to shorten the path.
   % cd ~
   % ln -s <very_long_path> short-cut
   % tar c short-cut/*.dat

The -C option might also be what you are looking for. Since you don't
give any details, it's hard to say what might be best for your case.
