Restoring deleted files

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a user whose files
were deleted, and the backup tape gives errors like:
Tape read error skipping inode 16757.
continue[yn]
however, when I type y it either reports a synchronzation error, or it
asks me to mount a new volume, and seems to rewind the tape and then
gives the same error message 10 minutes later.
Any ideas on how to pull the data off the tape?
Or alternately, since I can get the inode numbers from the backup
tape, and I doubt that those parts of the disk have been overwritten
yet, how can I get these data off of the disk?
Any help would greatly extend my life expectancy.
Sincerely,
Greg Hennessy
