using 286 IN/OUT instructions (Protected mode problems)

I currently have a program that requires the use of the 286's IN and OUT
instructions.  These instructions are not executable in protected mode.
Or is there a way around this problem.  

Do I have to write a device driver for this?

	if so ::
		Can someone tell me where to get it.
