Corrupted /etc/passwd question.

If /etc/password is getting corrupted by /bin/passwd, the first thing
I'd look for is an entry or entries in /etc/password with less than the
required number of fields.  Any such lines are guaranteed to create
havoc when /etc/passwd is operated upon.
