Getting rid of the 'envelope'

My question is rather simple:

How do I disable the 'Envelope' icon that appears everytime I have mail?
I've got my .profile set to tell me if I have mail, and clicking
on the little thing everytime new mail comes in is a pain.
How about a patch to run mail when I click the icon?  That wouldn't
be too bad... It blips up, and instead of "You have mail" it would
just let me read my mail...

Any ideas/suggestions?
