Help on Internal Modem Needed

I am relatively new to the UNIXPC and would like some advice
and opinions. I have been reading the docs for communications and
several things remain unanswered as yet.
If I have a telephone line plugged in to line 1 on the back,
and want to log in from remote (either a terminal/modem combo or
another UNIXPC), how does the autoanswer work? Do I have to do
something to tell it to answer? Do I have to turn off my answering
machine so the UNIXPC will pick up the line?
I haven't had time to test all the possibilities here and thought
someone with experience might save me some frustration.
I know I need to have a getty running. Would it be better if I have
the line plugged in line2? (I have another phone line I can plug in...)
Help is appreciated!
