can't build perl 4.003 (Irix 3.3.1)

Well I looked back through the last 4 weeks or so of comp.lang.perl in
an effort to save bandwidth and not ask this question but ....

I just tried to build 4.003 using the default build as done by Configure (yes,
I checked that the sgi.sh hints were used :-) and two of the tests failed.

These were comp/decl and op/write, viz:

% ./perl comp/decl.t
1..7
ok 1
ok 2
ok 3
ok 4
ok 5
ok 6ok 7
%
% ./perl op/write.t
1..3
not ok 1
not ok 2
not ok 3

Has anyone seen this at all and have a solution ?? (BTW my machine is a 240VGX
running Irix 3.3.1)
