Are fileservers a waste of money

Hi,

Does anyone have experience of using anything other than a Sun as a
fileserver for discless clients? This would be everthing - nd, root and
NFS mounts.  I saw some discussion about about using a Gould but I assume
this was just for NFS mounts.
