Help with MIPS "dbx" command

Does anyone know how to make the "dbx" command recognize symbol tables
in programs that need debugging? This is on a MIPS box. Programs
are entirely in C, compiled with the "-g" option and no "-O" option.
(A few times, I used "-O0 -g2", but it seems immune to this overkill
as well.) "dbx" always says that there is no symbol table, so it
refuses to print a stack traceback for the "where" command, or set
breakpoints or do anything else useful. Please kindly reply by
e-mail; I do not read this group. Thank you very much.
